Fully formed in 2007, BLACK TAXI is recognized as much for their wide-ranging musical influences as they are for their animated stage performance. Dance-Punk, Big-Wave and twisted Dive-Rock dominate the foursome’s Grit Pop sound, with strong undertones of Surf and Jazz. In their first full-length release, 2009’s Things of That Nature, they corrupt the traditional rock and roll line up of drums, bass, and guitar, with all manner of percussion, glockenspiel, brass arrangements, and distorted Fender Rhodes. Thick harmonies collide with spitfire guitar licks in songs that hint at The Clash, Cake, and Daft Punk, but are driven by something entirely new and infectious
“Things of that Nature is a high-octane, toe-tapping album packed with strong, funky guitar riffs, to graceful rockabilly songs that have the feeling of celebration with their hip-shaking rhythms. If the Clash and the Talking Heads were to have offspring, it would be BLACK TAXI.”—Performer Magazine,January 2010
“BLACK TAXI burst onto the stage with a nonchalant attitude and plenty of props that only bolstered their utilitarian yet theatrical rock sound. Honestly, keep an eye on these guys.” –CMJ, February 2010
“BLACK TAXI almost blew a fuse with their high-powered instrumentation and charisma.” –The Deli,March 2010
Take a ride with That Handsome Devil to the other side of town: a neighborhood where Charles Bukowski hung his hat at a juke joint; where the bartender knew Hunter Thompson’s single malt of choice and kept plenty in stock. This is the place where That Handsome Devil’s front man/songwriter Godforbid calls home, where Jeremy Page (producer/songwriter) bangs on a bullet-riddled piano, its beaten keys howling from a smoky corner. Their cracked-out, whiskey-cabaret punk jazz, echoing Outkast, Gogol Bordello and early Tom Waits, is the soundtrack to this bizarre scene.
Formed in late 2004, the inspiration for this Brooklyn-based group was the lack of meaningful music that makes it into the realm of pop. THD’s solution is what Godfobid calls “Fringe Pop.” And for the past half-decade, That Handsome Devil has received scores of positive reviews, being praised as "profoundly entertaining", "bizarre in a beautiful way" and "a madcap musical frenzy as dizzying as it is dazzling". THD has increased their national visibility with placement of the track "Mexico" in the Showtime network hit, Weeds, as well as the playable bonus tracks "Elephant Bones" in Guitar Hero II and "Rob the Prez-O-Dent" in Rock Band 2.
This summer, That Handsome Devil will hit the road with stops in cities such as New Orleans, Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland, Washington DC, and Pittsburgh.
Two kids rummaging the finest musical dumpster, Josh and Woody have mended parts and motors, soldered and stitched, to curate a new musical monster. Based on acoustic roots and rhythms, but driving with a distorted punk force, decibel. leave no compact bin unturned. In fact, everything is recycled.
